Luweero — Kasana-Luweero Catholic Diocese has embarked on a Shs1.5 billion agriculture project aimed at improving people’s household income and ensuring food security.
The three-year project, to be implemented by the diocese’s welfare department, is funded by the Germany government and targets farmer groups in Kakooge Sub-County in Nakasongola District, and Kalagala and Zirobwe sub-counties in Luweero District.
The long term plan
According to Caritas director Hillary Muhezangago, selected beneficiaries will be supported in food production, storage, value addition and marketing processes.
“The Ready Uganda Project has already mapped out a strategy through which established farmer groups will be helped to graduate to cooperative societies for easy management, marketing and value addition,” said Fr Muhezangago while launching the project at the weekend.
The diocesan administrator, the Rev Fr Vincent Kakooza Nyanzi, who represented Bishop Paul Ssemogerere, said Caritas projects have improved livelihoods for 600 farmer groups in Nakaseke, Luweero and Nakasongola districts.
The project, according to Fr Nyanzi, seeks to empower rural farmers to live a good life through earning from different agriculture projects.
